BR Coaches Earn Awards- Feb. 14, 2010 Kathie DeBonis and Charles “Chuck” Apel have been named 2009 National Federation of State High School Associations “National Coaches of the Year.” Kathie has been named National Coach of the Year in Girls Field Hockey and Chuck has been named National Coach of the Year in Boys Lacrosse.
The criteria used in selecting national coaches includes career coaching record, community service, involvement in other school activities, involvement in coaches’ profession at the local, state and national level, and the coaches’ basic philosophy of athletics
Kathie holds a career 199-96-8 record in Field Hockey at BRHS. Her field hockey teams have won five State Sectional Championships, three Central Jersey Group Championships, and six Skyland Conference Championships. She has been designated County Coach of the Year in Field Hockey on five occasions. Kathie has also been a highly successful coach in Girls Lacrosse, Girls Tennis, and Girls Swimming. Kathie is a Health and Physical Education teacher at B-R.
Chuck Apel holds a career 355-192 record in Lacrosse at BRHS. His lacrosse teams have won one New Jersey State Championship, one Division IV State Championship and numerous Pitt Division Championships. He has been designated New Jersey Lacrosse Coach of the Year and four times County Lacrosse Coach of the Year. Chuck has also been highly successful as a football and basketball coach at B-R. Chuck is a Health and Physical Education teacher at B-R.
